SAC. 3 December: Education is not only scoring marks; but it is the all-round development of the student said Rev Fr Francis Serrao, Rector, as the chief guest during the annual sports meet of the Evening Pre University College.

The Principal, Mr. John D’Silva, welcoming the gathering, stressed the importance of the Evening College students in College. He also quoted Rector that the Evening College students are next to his heart.

The Evening PUC students went on march-past, which was followed by the inspection of the parade by Fr Rector. Later he hoisted the College flag. Sports followed.

SAC - School Day Celebrated

1 Dec. Nostalgia, gratitude, excellence, a massive gathering of students and their parents, and display of multifarious talents and fun and laughter, and spontaneous rounds applause marked the 127th School Day of St Aloysius College High School, Mangalore, here on Friday evening.

Prof. Ramachandra Rao, an alumnus of St Aloysius College (1956 batch of graduates), was the chief guest at the school day. Prof Rao, a chemical scientist, a gold medallist, founding member of APNA (North American chapter of St Aloysius College Alumni), awardee of many a prestigious international awards including the Teck Cominco Environmental award (2006)- and scholar-researcher in Canada, ruminated over his student days at St Aloysius College and his days back in Mangalore. He congratulated the school and the management for the excellent educational and developmental service it renders to humanity. Deservedly, the winner of many an award at St Aloysius College, Prof. Rao, also gave away the certificates to students. Rev Fr Francis Serrao SJ, Rector of SAC Institutions and the president of the function, congratulated Fr Gilbert (head master), his staff, and students for the impressive all-round growth achieved in the last year. An excellent short cultural programme followed the formal programme. Fusion dance, fisher folk dance, songs such as Vande Mataram ( A R Rehman rendering), Fire, Falling in Love with you, Hindi songs, and Dhooma Ketugalu, a short comedy kept the audience on the edge of their seats! Earlier, the choir and the College Band and the orchestra accompanied the Chief Guest, Rector, Headmaster, and Mr Satish Pai (vice president of Parent Teachers Association) to the dais. Fr Gilbert Saldanha read the annual report, and the school pupil leader proposed the vote of thanks. Special Olympics make it Special at St Aloysius

Mangalore, November 28: Dakshina Kannada District Special Olympics 2006 and Karnataka State Bocce Championship were organized by St Agnes Special School in association with Special Olympics Bharat- Karnataka (SOBK) on Tuesday, here at the St Aloysius College Centenary Ground. A march past by participants kicked off the special Olympics 2006. Holding a programme like a sports meet for the differently abled is not easy because of the extra care and responsibility attached to it, said Mr Maheshwara Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Mangalore, while inaugurating the special Olympics. He commended the efforts of the organizers for taking up this challenge. India has been a consistent performer at the international level in special Olympics, Mr Balakrishna, Board of Directors of SOBK. He drew the attention of those present to the fact that India wins many medal at special olypics, unlike in the regular Olympics, where India usually draws a blank. On this occasion, the popular bandmaster Mr Harry D'Souza was felicitated for his contribution to music. St Agnes Special School Mangalore, Sanidhya Special School Mangalore, Chethana Special School Mangalore, Lions' Special School Surathkal, Krista Raj Special School Venur, and St Mary's Special School Kinnigoli are participating in the event. In this special Olympics, where two different types events (district level and state level) are conducted simultaneously, events like like long jump, soft ball throw, running race, walking race and so on are also held. Mangalore, November 26: Do you remember flying kites when you were a kid? ......whatever may be the answer, the students of St Aloysius Primary and Middle School are having fun in the fancy fete jointly organized by the School and Parent Teachers’ Association to support the Kannada medium students of school.

The fete is full games and competitions like like The Smart Kid, fancy dress, fishing the bottle, wearing the bindi, etc. for the students. Both, the children as well as their parents are testing their skills in these games. Besides fun and games, you can a taste of many eatables, too. (reported by Arron Menezes)

Mangalore, November 25: ‘Aththi devobhava',was proved true at ‘Pre Unique’ the State Level Inter Pre University Intellectual and Cultural Fest of the St Aloysius PU College, by handing over the first place to St Agnes PU College, Mangalore by the host college. Actually, St Agnes, bagged runners up, behind champions St Aloysius PU College. But since SAC is the host and it did not intend to give prize to itself. Hence, the first place went to St Agnes College, whereas Alva’s College Moodbidri bagged the second place at this State Level fest. Vision and Action are keys to success. If the vision is not clear, actions will not be clear and you cannot achieve success, said the Chief Guest Rev. Sr Maria Goretti S. R. A, Superior General designate of Missionary Sisters of the Queen of Apostles (S. R. A.). She also wished good luck to one and all and invoked God’s blessings on the participants for the future. We expect our students to be men and women for others, said the president Rev. Fr Francis Serrao SJ, Rector St Aloysius Institutions, and he congratulated all the participants. Participants from various colleges shared their feelings about the fest and their words only echoed that Preunique was a great success. The chief guest and president of the function gave away the prizes. Mr.Grishin D’Souza, Asst. Convener, welcomed and introduced the chief guest. And Mr. Sunil D’Cunha proposed vote of thanks. New Student Editors for the Blogs

24 Nov. I have been uploading the blogs of the department and my own, for over a year, now, sometimes uploading 3-4 times a day. That has made a lot of difference to many people around - my students, former students, friends and benefactors. I have learnt much in the bargain.

Now it is time to hand over the reign of the blogs to my students. Abrar and Arron have come forward to shoulder this responsibility of uploading the blogs (both the blogspot blogs). It is a massive task, demands much dedication, time and energy. But given their dedication, they would surely do a good job, under the able guidance of Ms Suman. I congratulate them and wish them well.

Two day councelling programme starts off

a A two day counselling programme for the staff of the St Aloysius institution started off on Friday here at the IT Block of the College. Fr Pradeep Sequira is the resource person of the programme. ‘Listening is an art and a science as well’ said Rector of the St Aloysius Institutions, Fr Francis Serrao SJ initiating the programme. He added that when students are admitted to an institution it is the teachers’ responsibility to form them into better individuals. He opined that today’s youth need counselling in order to enable them to solve their problems. 'Pre Unique' Kicks Off

Mangalore, November 24: A State Level Inter Pre University Intellectual and Cultural Fest of the St Aloysius PU College, ‘Pre Unique’ started off on Friday, November 24, at the Pretorium of the College here. Fr Francis Serrao, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions and administrator of SAPUC, Presided over the function. Chief Guest Principal of the St Aloysius Degree College, Fr Eugene Lobo, inaugurated the event. Addressing the gathering, Fr Eugene said that he doesn’t really feel an alien guest inaugurating the function. He said he is pretty much a part of the Institution and an alumnus of the College as well. Principal, SAPUC, John D’Silva, mentioned that this is the seventh year of Pre Unique. It was started in the year 2000. It aims to develop cultural, educational and spiritual qualities of students. Fr Francis Serrao, addressing the students, said that they are the future of tomorrow and the destiny of the country lies in their hands. ‘ Imprints’ the ‘Science Model Exhibition’, was inaugurated by Fr Eugene Lobo. The dignitaries were amazed at the creativity of the students that reflected in their models. The Art Beat (painting), Master Mind(General Quiz), Pre Unique 24X7 (News Bulletin), You Can Cook (Cooking without fire), Naach Baliye (Indian Folk Dance) , The Big Fight (Debate) are some of the competitions that will be held. Alnasium Inaugurated

Mangalore, November 23: “Alnasium,” the gymnasium of St Aloysius College, under the auspices of St Aloysius P U College was inaugurated by Rev Fr Victor Machado, Rector of St Joseph’s Interdioceasan Seminary, Mangalore, here on Thursday. “Sports Day” of St Aloysius P U College also was kicked off during this inaugural ceremony at the Gonzaga Stadium (Pathala Grounds) of the College. Rev. Fr Francis Serrao, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions, blessed the building of Alnasium. [Rev Fr Rector blessing the building] “Alnesium” a combination of Aloysian Gymnasium, is well equipped with many facilities and equipments such as a Multi-Unit, Dumb-bells, TV and music facilities for effective work-out. The gymnasium has a couple of Table Tennis courts in the building. A separate ‘change room’ for students has been provided as well. The gymnasium project is a brainchild of Rev Fr Swebert D’Silva, the former Principal St Aloysius PUC. It took a year to complete this project. It was launched and executed by him, before he left for his Sabbatical to America. Prior the inauguration of Alnasium, PUC students went on march-past during which lighting of torch also took place. Industrial Technical Centre Building Inaugurated

22 Nov. May Silver turn to Gold and then Plantinum, that was the wish on the lips of those gathered to participate in the inauguration of the St Aloysius Industrial Training Centre, here on Tuesday. Rev. Fr Vijay Kumar Prabhu SJ, Provincial superior of the Karnataka Jesuits, blessed the new building and its many departments. Later, while greeting the students, staff, and the associates of the Jesuits, he congratulated Rev. Fr Dr Leo D'Souza SJ, for his keen interest in getting this new building completed. This is the silver jubilee year of the SAITC (formerly known as TTI). It was Fr Leo D'Souza, a world renowned botanist, and the former Principal and Rector of St Aloysius College, who started this training school for the socio-economically poor. It was specially aimed at drop-outs from high school, who found it difficult to complete their formal education, but needed a way of making a living. During the Centenary Year of the College (1980) the project, along with Aloysian Boys Home was launched. The project has matured and has come to be Silver Jubilarian this year. During his address, Fr Vijay Prabhu explained the significance of this project. With the nominal fees students would not have been able to finance their education. Niehter would the management be able to subsidise such a costly training. In this context, Fr Leo, who spends two to three months every year, teaching in Germany, impressed upon some of his German friends to associate themselves with these two project. As a result, we have this beautiful building, Fr Vijay Prabhu said. Though the institute has had a building and a workshop for the many courses, in this jubilee year, a new and spacious building has been built to accomodate the growing number courses and students, girls included. Among some of the benefactors, Dr Frank Heuer, Mrs Monika Heuer, Mr Bernhard Bohne, Ms Anneliese Bohne, Mr Gerhard Schepke and Mrs Christa Gers-Grapperhaus visited India, specially to participate in this inauguration and show their solidarity with the deserving students of Mangalore. Fr Leo D'Souza, while introducing the guests, stressed that they are ordinary lay men and women, who run farms or do small business, but are deeply attached to the poor. The German guests were welcomed with the traditional Indian Kalasha procession and Indian dance. Each of them inaugurated a workshop of the training centre. We are back on blogspot.com. Thanks to freehostia and American Indo-phobia. We were sailing sweetly on www.sacjournalism.freehostia.com, and just then we were blocked for no reason. Since we don't want our friends and well wishers to lose on SAC news, we are back to this good-old blog. From now on, till we get a better option, we hope to update you on whatever is happening on our campus, at the earliest possible. For now, Semester exams have begun on 2 November. They will go on till late November, followed by valuation. Hence, the Degree campus is enveloped in exams mood, specially the semester scheme students. The non semester, II & III Yr students -many of them- have left Mangalore; those IN, don't want to miss the campus buzz. In fact, the other day, when one of the lecturers came to the Campus on a Monday when NOBODY was to be there, he was surprised to find hundreds of students in the campus. But consider this: a simple blog, done in the least glamorous fashion, circulating views and news of a less known mortal beyond his class walls - records 4,008 hits in about 11 months! That is www.richardrego.blogspot.com ! This is a small indication of the people's (our visitor's) quest for news and sincere views - about his college, department, or any personal beliefs! Over the months I have noticed an increased trafffic to this lowly blog - from my students, to individuals, to groups/ companies. They have found this blog reliable, authentic, and 'right there' - up-to-the-minute! Maintaining a blog is not the easiest things in life, I have learnt it the hard way! Sometimes, I have spent 2-3 hours every day to update the two little blogs with news items and photos! That is the fun; that is one thing I can pride in. And I am happy about it; I will be happy about it. A similar thing applies to www.sacjournalism.blogspot.com (now trying various options with domains such as awardspace.com, freehostia.com, etc. in our search for best availabe host). In any case, when you log on to this old blog(spot), you will be automatically redirected to the new blog; you don't have worry about it. By the by, this blog has registered 3527 hits in about the same period (11 months). This has been basically a College news blog - giving a bird's eye view to our friends, benefactors, alumni-alumnae, and well wishers. Besides, the blog has given some precious training to my students in practicing their academic studies - reporting and photography. Some have already made a transition to other professional media - drawing much attention from the public (thanks to our friends from media!!!). Our two blogs have served my students, the college, and all those associated in some way or the other, a great deal. Journalism has come to grass roots; alternative journalism has proved quite a revelation. I am grateful to our blog-visitors [who range from India (almost every state) to USA, UK, Australia, Singapore, Hongkong, Mexico, etc.... some unknown countries too! A few have been generous with their suggestions (some constructive ones, I mean)]. I welcome them all. I thank you for your faith in me, in my Department of Journalism, in our Alma Mater (SAC). I have already moved to www.richardrego.wordpress.com. But this blog(spot) will continue to bear the archive, besides, redirecting you to my new host/ domain (in the near future). ITS ALL ABOUT ENGLISH AND MUCH MORE……..

Sep 30: The 30 hrs Proficiency in Spoken English Course organized by ‘Anubhav’ the women’s forum of St Aloysius College came to an end today. Around 40 Women from various Self Help Groups, and students interested to learn and improve their communication skills in English attended the course.
“We have learnt and also improved our English, It was educating and fun at the same time,” was the chorus of the participants. We had a great time with the ‘students’ who were our ‘teachers’. We are grateful to the organizers of this certificate course,” said one of the participants while sharing her experiences.

Addressing the participants, Ms Sonia D’Costa, the Coordinator of the Certificate Course, said “Learning English is learning to ride a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler; the instructor can help you to understand the basics but you will not learn to ride properly unless you take a ride yourself. So, with the basics taught here, you need to improve it by reading, listening and writing English regularly. If you do so in six months times you can speak English as fluently as I do!”
Participants were awarded certificates at the end of the course. Ms Shalini Aiyappa, Prescilla D’Silva -the Staff Co-coordinators of the Association-, Anusha, the Secretary of the Association were present on the occasion.

For more information contact richiersj@yahoo.com Life Giving Gesture – “Sanjeevini” Students of AIBA, Management Club, St Aloysius College, organized ‘Sanjeevini’-Blood Donation Camp on September 14 in St Aloysius College Auditorium. The function was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Francis Serrao SJ, Rector, St. Aloysius College Institutions. In his inaugural address, Fr. Rector appreciated the altruistic efforts by MBA Students to organize this event for a worthy cause. He also mentioned that voluntary donation of blood, is not only beneficial to the giver, but also serves the social cause of giving much needed blood to the poor and the needy. Dr. Sharath fromUdupi also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the benefits of donating blood regularly and invited as many of the students to donate their blood without any fear.

Inter Collegiate Hindi Festival by Hindi Sangh

‘Hindi Sangh’ of St.Aloysius College held an ‘Inter Collegiate Festival’ for the students at I.T. Auditorium on September 14. The day was celebrated as’ National Hindi Day’. Judges assigned for the various competitions were P.R.Paul [MRPL], Kalpana Prabhu [Canara College], Santhosh [P.U.College], Ganapathi Bhat [Besant Evening College], Mukund Prabhu [HOD, St. Aloysius], Dr.Nageratna [University College], Sri Gopal Rao [Aloysius College], Judy Pinto [Aloysius College], Dr.Suma R [University College] and Ms Latha Krishnan. Students from various colleges participated in various competitions in Hindi.

W.H.O. Life Skills Program

Dept of Social Work (MSW), St. Aloysius College, organized a “W.H.O. Life Skills Program” for the MSW students at Teletorium on September 14 Thursday. Dr. Padmini Pie, Dean of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Dr. Ronald Cutinho and Rev. Fr.Francis Serrao SJ, Rector, St. Aloysius College, were present during the occasion. Seminar on ‘Gender Equity’

‘Anubhav’ [Women’s Forum] of St. Aloysius College held a paper presentation on ‘Gender Equity’ at Xavier Auditorium on September 14 Thursday. The event consisted of two sessions. Lecturing was done by Dr. Jacinta D’ Souza and Dr. Suma Ramesh. They talked of ‘Constitutional Rights for Women’. It was a follow up of the seminar organized by Anubhav, last week.

For more information contact richiersj@yahoo.com The Humanities Association of the College conducted a panel discussion on Mass Media and Indian Freedom Struggle here on Tuesday. Eleven students presented papers explaining the role of the media during the epochal period of India's history. Media, mostly understood as the press, elucidated the role played by the media, specially in the first half of the 20th century. Press was the only form of immediate communication, most of them opined. The war of independence was fought not with guns or bombs, but with the press, others quoted some authors. Mr Denis Fernandes, Mr Aditya, and Fr Richard Rego were judged. Fr Richard Rego summed up the participants' opinion on the independence struggle of India. Media play a crucial role in informing the people, he said. While appreciating the efforts of the Humanities association in giving an opportunity to the students to explore the role of media during India's freedom struggle and widen their own minds, he congratulated the students for good presentations. Panel discussions should lead us to read widely and make our own conclusion and present them logically, he exorted the students. Journalism is above technology, said Dr Poornananda Dasegowda, Reader, Dept of Mass Communication and Journalism, Mangalore University. He was addressing the students of Journalism, on behalf of Al Madhyam on "Education and Career Opportunities in Mass Communication" [In the picture are seen: Ms Suman Mendonca, Fr Richie Rego and Dr Poornananda, caught in an interesting debate, just before the programme!)

The Scholar gave a nuanced understanding of journalism distinct from that of technology driven media specialisation and technique-based skill, that is journalism.

Today we need journalists, not technologists, he hinted. One can learn about technology anytime, anywhere. Technology keeps changing. But we need to learn the basics.

For this need to ground ourselves well into various social scineces; read extensively. Our masters programmes need to concentrate more on theory, whereas undergraduate programmes could look after practical aspects. In the second part of his lecture, the media teacher from the University spoke about the various institutions which offer mass communications at masters level. He also spoke of job opportunities in mass communication, in relation to various fields. Fr Richie Rego SJ, Head of the Dept of Journalism, summarised the Guest Speaker's talk, and added some of his own comments, in pointing out the avenues for higher education, their merits, and also job opportunities. Ms Suman Mendonca (President of Al Madhyam) and Anisha Sheth (Secretary) with Nikhil D'Sa (Jt. Secretary) and other students were present. Students Sensitised to Gender Issues 7 Sept.06. Students of St Aloysius College realise how important it is to be sensitive to half the humanity that has been relegated to the second place in society. Dr Rita Noronha, professor at Roshani Nilaya, was the the resource person. Anubhav the women's forum of St Aloysius College, organised the programme at the leadership of Ms Shalini Aiyappa. On 5^th September 5, 2006 the SAC Student's Council organised a programme to celebrate Teachers Day. The student's council President Nishank Bhandari along with secretary Sanmith Mally and Joint Secretary Fiona D'costa welcomed the Principal Rev. Fr. Eugene Lobo, Vice Principal Eric Patrao and Director of students council Richard Gonsalves on to the dais for the formal function.

The Principal, the vice Principal and the Director gave colorful anecdotes on teachers and their lives with students and even how it was for them to be students. The formal function gave way to an informal function where the students put up colorful dances, songs rendered by students and teachers played games with the students.

4 Sept. 06. The Christian Life Community held a singing competition of songs in honour of Mother Mary on the occasion of her nativity on the 8 September. There was a rendition of 'Marian' songs by various CLC members. The judges of the competition were Mr. Ratan Mohantha, Ms. Ancita Pinto and Ms. Prajwal Lobo.

Students from various departments of the college took part with great zeal and enthusiasm. The programme was a great rendition of melodious songs by the students.

The Kannada Sangha is oranginising a two day seminar on study of short stories, beginning today, in the College auditorium.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mrs Vaidehi, a renowned Kannada writer, by flying the cock.

Prof. T.P Ashok, Kannada writer and critic, who was the chief guest, spoke about the importance of studying short stories. He also suggested how one can write and study short stories. The seminar received a huge students support with more than 160 students from over 20 colleges participating in it.

KONKANI SANGHA GOES SINGING

It was a musical time at Konkani Sangh, St Aloysius College. The Sangh organized a singing competition for the students of College. The small Sangh’s popularity was vindicated by a massive response: the 16 participants in the solo category, and five in the group singing category. The judges of the function were Ms. Stella D’ Costa (Dept of Konkani ) and Ms. Ancita Pinto (Dept of BSW). Results are awaited.

Al-Madhyam Screens Prize Winning Suddha

P N Ramachandra’s much acclaimed Suddha was screened by Al Madhyam, the media forum of the College, this afternoon. Suddha is the first full length digital Tulu feature film. The film is based on a play Bojja, by Narayan Nandalike.

The film explores the crumbling feudal system and, consequently, the emerging new social equations. Suddha is located in Mangalore, and mostly shot in Marnad, near Moodbidri.

It is 105 minutes long film, written, scripted, and directed by Mr Ramachandra, with a shoe-string budget. Ramachandra himself has done sound designing and editing. Its natural lighting is much appreciated, to which most students well-vibrated.

The second day of ACME, the Commerce Faculty Fest of St Aloysius College, witnessed many a hard won battle in Verdict, Madinah, Gladiator, De Code, Corporate Moguls, and Stress Interview finals. The the valedictory function started late. The Chief Guest of the function was Captain Ganesh Karnik, Member of Legislative Council, Govt. of Karnataka. St Joseph's Commerce College, Bangalore bagged the championship of ACME.

Students representing various colleges shared their experience of being a part of ACME. Chief Guest Capt. Ganesh Karnik shared his school and career experiences. Mangalore, Aug 31: The national-level intercollegiate Commerce fest 'ACME-2006' hosted by the Commerce department of St Aloysius College on Thursday, August 31 morning.

College principal Dr Eugene Lobo, St Aloysius institutions' rector Fr Frankie Serrao, Prof A M Narahari and Manoj Louis of the department and student coordinators were present on the occasion.

Ashika and group of I BCom presented a graceful, contemporary inauigural dance. A total of 170 students from 17 colleges of India are taking part in the fest.

The valedictory function will be held on Friday, September 1, where MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik will be the chief guest.

Fr Salvadore Lobo Passes Away

For more information contact richiersj@yahoo.com Fr Salvadore Lobo SJ passed away this evening in Mangalore Fr Salvadore was born in Loretto on 06.05.1937; after his initial studies he joined the Society of Jesus on 01.07.57, to be a priest. He was ordained a priest on 22.03.68. Fr Lobo was an expert in moral theology which he taught most part of his priestly life at St Joseph's Seminary, Jeppu, Mangalore. He played a major role in the formation of the Dioceasan Clergy for many years. After his retirement from the Seminary, Fr Lobo served St Aloysius College Jesuit Residence as an Administrator. In the recent past, he was at Fatima Retreat House, Mangalore. This evening, Fr Lobo had a massive heart attack. He was rushed to Fr Muller's Hospital. While on his way to the hospital, Fr Lobo breathed his last. Fr Lobo's mortal remains will be kept open for the public to pay last respects at Fatima Retreat House, at 2.30 pm. The funeral will take place at the Seminary at 4.00 pm.

Anubhav organises talk on women’s health

25 August 2006: Anubhav, the Women’s Forum of the College organized a talk on the Reproductive Health of Women, in the Xavier Auditorium on Friday.

Dr. Deepak Shedde, renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist and associate professor at KMC, Mangalore was the resource person. He spoke about the importance of the reproductive health of women, organs and process of reproduction and pregnancy.

Mrs. Shalini Aiyappa, the President of Anubhav was also present.

Konkani Quiz Competition held 25 August 2006: The Konkani Sangh conducted an inter-faculty quiz competition open to all students who know the language well.

It was conducted by Vishal D’Cunha of III B.Com and was based on general knowledge. The quiz was entirely in Konkani language and had 7 contesting groups comprising of 3 members each.Ms. Stella D’Costa, President of Konkani Sangh was also present.

25 August 2006: The IT Club and Electronics Club organized a talk on the positive and negative aspects of mobile communication in the Eric Mathias hall on Friday.

Mr. A. V. Jacob, Department of MCA was the resource person for the talk.

He gave a presentation on ‘Redefining Wireless Mobility’. He described mobiles as a nuisance and as dangerous as cigarettes. He also about the psycho-physical aspects of wireless communication. While mobiles can be a necessity, he added that mobiles are a craze with the present generation.

For more information and photos, please visit www.richardrego.blogspot.com Loss of Committed Jesuit Mourned August 23, 2006: “When good men die, their goodness doesn’t perish.” said Mr. Charles Furtado, President of Sahodaya, the outreach programme of the St Aloysius College, during a condolence prayer meeting in memory of Bro.Loy Manohar Fernandes who passed away in a tragic accident on 18 August 2006. Mr Furtado remembered Loy as a faithful student and committed Jesuit. Loy was purposeful in his life and was gifted with a sense of humour. He was secular and good with everybody. He had a flair for story-telling and always had an active and enraptured audience. Rev. Fr. Eugene Lobo, the Principal also churned out memories of Loy as a dedicated young Jesuit. AL-LEAF Makes Aloysius Evergreen August 21, 2006: “Small is Beautiful” said Prof. Vineetha K., social worker, Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, after inaugurating AL-LEAF (Local Environment Awareness Forum) at the Xavier auditorium on Monday. [Prof. Eric Patrao plants a sapling, symbolic. eh?] Prof. Vineetha, the Chief Guest of the function, said that though the number of students in the forum was not large, they still could make a big difference. She spoke of the environmental problems in India citing reasons and examples from our own city, Mangalore. [Prof. Vineeta inaugurated the LEAF, and addressed the students, too] The movement was started by planting saplings in the College campus. Rev. Fr. Muliya Thimmappayya’s book releasing function 18 Aug. Kannada Sangha, in association with “Dasajana,” organized a function to release the collection of Muliya Thimmappayya’s poems and critical essays. The function was organized in Xavier Block at 5.oo p.m. Mr Thonse Pushkal Kumar, the noted singer, kick started the programme with his mellifluous singing. Corporate Communications: A Viable Career Option: Amith Prabhu Amith Prabhu, an ex-Aloysian and a PR at Genesis consultancies, Bangalore, shared his experience on public relations as a profession on 14 august 2006 at the Xavier block. Mr Prabhu shared with the students of journalism about his internship while he was studying in Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, Pune .He was the first person to do internship with the Congress Party, during its election campaign, 2004. Electoral public relations has not yet developed in India, he opined. 12 August. The students of St Aloysius College along with a few guests were treated to a cinematic feast with the much hyped Iranian film "Where is the Friend's Home?", here on Saturday afternoon. The cinematic treat began with a screening of a video album 'Jana Gana Mana' by A R Rehaman, composed on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of India's Independence (1997). The audience was silenced to utter respect for their country. [The audience was mesmerised by this cute little film] [Fr Richard Rego helped the audience to share their cinematic experience with one another thus enriching the collective cinematic pleasure. The audience was free and frank in sharing their likes feelings and thoughts on the movie] Ahmed decides to go in search of his friend's house in a village which he does not know. In the process he meets many people with their weired ways and insensitive attitudes, who never care for the little boy. They live in their own adult world, which is harsh. The film portrays the harsh realities and contradictions of this world adults. The windings of the way, the jarring music, low-key lighting all add up to the harsh effects of the film. Realistically done, this movie is a cinematic treat. Though it has children in the lime light, it is hardly anything but children's film. Abbas Kiarostami is sensitive to the children's world; he creates music from the raw material of his raw observation of children and adults in action. The film was followed by a lively discussion facilitated by Fr Richard Rego, many students wanting to express their understanding of the movie. 7 Aug. Dr Mrinalini Sebastian. That is a familiar name in scholarly circles, specially, if you are associated with Centre for the Study of Culture and Society (CSCS). Dr Mrinalini was at St Aloysius College to meet the Principal, staff and students to collect material for a book to be published by CSCS on Undergraduate- Post Graduate studies interface. Dr Mrinalini spent much time with Fr Principal, Dept of Journalism, Fr Dr Leo D'Souza and other departments, discussing the various academic initiatives introduced by SAC to make education more student friendly and academically fruitful. In the process, she also met the final year Journalism students to discuss the same. After her brief chat regarding her topic, she was at her best! She enlightened the students on 'what is cultural studies?' Instead, she said, first need to ask 'what is culture?' Phut, came replies from the students. She picked up from there to point out how some thinkers consider certain thinkgs, relations, perceptions, aspects of life as 'texts' to be decoded. They try to ask the question 'why it is that way?' The ancient Indian discipline of ‘yoga’ is increasingly being seen as the best remedy and also preventive method for stress, tension and other psychological and physical health problems. In this respect students who are increasingly under stress and other health problems owing to the sedentary life style are showing great interest in Yoga. This interest among students can be best exemplified by the positive response of students shown in the ten day yoga camp conducted at St Aloysius College. The camp for the students of St. Aloysius College began on the 24th of July under the guidance of Mr. S V. Srikanth, a rank holder in M Sc. Yoga from the Mangalore University. Mr. Srikanth believes that by the practice of Yogasanas the impurities of mind vanish and the light of knowledge will glow at its best. He also added that by the practice of Yoga perception and knowledge increases thus student attaining success. Since the subconscious actually controls the conscious, yoga trains the subconscious thus the conscious also being controlled. Hence success comes within our reach. Dr. S Krisnamurthy, President Sanskrit Sangh under whose aegis this Yoga camp is organized says “this is a goal oriented, short term, scientifically tested training programme which aims towards achievement in the enhancement of concentration and memory. This programme being organized for the past five years. From the very beginning a lot of students have benefited immensely. The benefits are seen especially in the academic sphere and also in the personal life.” The only limitation, according Dr Krishnamurthy is that the programme can not be conducted for a larger group. A novel way indeed, for those who wish to make the best use of their inner resources. It is specially organized for those who have found long hours and vigorous study challenging. It helps in improving concentration level and reduces stress. No doubt, then, many students found the camp useful. === == == An Ice Breaker For the 1st Year MSW’s….. A Group Dynamics Programme was conducted by the IInd year MSW Students for the Ist years on the 5th of August 2006. The main objective was to interact and to get to know each other. Students Visualise Humane Electronic Era July 26. Computers reading palms? Doormats identifying visitors? It might sound chimerical. MSW Scores Double Century! 24 July. SAC. It is celebration time at St Aloysius College Institute of Social Work. All the sweat, toil, labour of the students, hard work of the staff and initiative of the College Management has paid rich dividends. The University results of the MSW semester examinations held in April – May 2006 have been declared by the University. SAC has scored an enviable 100% results in both the second and fourth semester examinations. Out of the 56 students appeared for the examination in the second semester 11 students have scored distinction while 41 have scored first class, and four second! Similarly, of the 60 fourth semester students nine have bagged distinction, two second class and the rest have scored first class! Congratulations to all the students, staff and Principal! Mr Kishore Kumar and Mr Rajanesh Nair, Marketing Executives, spent half-an-hour with the final year Journalism Students explaiing the nitty grity of a newspaper, process of news production and circulation, advertising and other related matters. 7 July. Parents Learn Credit Based Semester System Students of the Mangalore University study in a new academic system called Credit Based Semester System, this year onwards. But at St Aloysius, along with students, their parents too learn a bit about this system. This was made possible by the initiative of the Faculty of Science of the College. The Faculty invited the parents of the First year B.Sc. students of the College for an input session on the new academic system. Rev Fr Eugene Lobo SJ, principal, Prof. Eric Patrao, Vice Principal, and Profs. Harsha Paul and Dr Shreedhar, Deans of Bio Science and Physical Science Faculties respectively were the speakers on the occasion. This is a unique meeting involving the parents in the education of their children. 07 July. SAC. Teachers teaching is commonplace. But students teaching? Probably, not as common. But that is exactly what is happening at St Aloysius College. For those who come from varied backgrounds, specially from non-English medium background- getting into the massive environs of St Aloysius College can be an overwhelming experience. In order to familiarise the freshers undergraduates) with their seniors and with freshers, every year the College organises Bridge Course. The Final year Arts students are initiated into being "facilitators" or help the juniors to learn. They teach them how to speak in English, how to come in front of a big group and speak something meaningful, and to prepare and discuss things. [Nikhil D'Sa of final year is quite at home, being a 'little teacher'] [Miss Chaya of final year helping her juniors to break the ice] The speciality of this course stems from the fact that it is the students who facilitate the new students to learn english, to come forward and face the crowd, to speak, to discuss, and to make friends with one another. In the bargain, both the freshers and the 'old timers' end up gaining much in terms of learning and experience. The College, under the leadership of the Dept of English has been organising Bridge Course for the freshers for the past few years. Over years, the seven-day course has been abridged to three day course. Though the period of intense learning is very brief, still, freshers gain much in terms of familiarity with English, with environs, and with one another is tremendous. Over the year the SAC has learnt that the time and energy put in by the staff and students in this course, pays rich dividends. By the end of the end of final year, these students -many of whom enter the campus with much hesisation- become fluent in English and also in interpersonal relationships. The senior students learn how to teach their own friends - students of their own age! In the process, they become 'little teachers in the making'!

Shetty HOD of the Department of Kannada introduced the guests. Mr. Ravikumar of the Abhinava Magazine welcomed the gathering. The Chief Guest, Mr. Sugatha Srinivasa Raju of the Outlook Magazine spoke on Literary Magazines in Kannada as well as the effects of globalization on it. Mr Naik, a former student of Journalism, is currently got a posting on probation for tresury after getting into the top ten in KPSC. He also has attempted a UPSC exam. Mr Naik gave a bird's eye view of competitive exams, it modalities, and on how to prepare for such exams. Commerce Association Inaugurated The inauguration of the Commerce Association was held in the Auditorium today. The programme began with a prayer song. The Chief Guest of the day, Prof. P.S. Yedapadithay, Chairman & Professor of the Department of Post Graduate studies of Mangalore University, inaugurated the Association by lighting the lamp P.S. Al Madhyam Occupies Central Stage If you have aptitude, you can make a good journalist stressed Mr S Nandagopal, Senior Correspondenct with The Times of India, while inaugurating Al Madhyam, the media forum of St Aloysius College. He was speaking on Journlism – A Career Perspective. Journalism is a way of life; it cannot be taught, Mr Nandagopal said, while criticizing journalism education. In his broadside against the system, he said, the syllabi are not updated to suit the needs of the profession. But he had a word of praise for the Department of Journalism, at SAC, for its innovative practices and practical approach to teaching. Earlier, Mr Nandagopal inaugurated the forum by lighting the lamp along with Rev. Fr. Eugene Lobo, Principal , Ms Suman Mendonca, President of the forum, Fr. Richard Rego & Miss Anisha Sheth, Secretary. After the entire gathering watched a short documentary made by Abrar Khan and Arron Menezes, final year students of journalism at SAC, Rev. Fr. Dr. Eugene Lobo spoke to the students about the role of journalists, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. He also congratulated the staff and students of this important department of the College. A seminar was held in the auditorium for the lecturers of St. Aloysius College to better understand the credit based semester system which is introduce in the Mangalore University (MU) Prof. Narahari, Dean of Commerce, introduced the resource person Dr. Madhav Rao, Prof. of Statistics, M.G.M College Udupi, who used a PowerPoint Presentation to explain the new system at MU. Dr. Rao also facilitated a question and answer session after his talk, to clarify lecturers’ doubts. The seminar was followed by a meeting of the Presidents of the College Associations. Dept of Kannada Releases Books 27 June 2006. A seminar cum book release function was organized by the Mangalore University, in collaboration with the Dept. of Kannada, St. Aloysius College. The event held at the auditorium of St Aloysius College was attended by Kannada lecturers of various colleges as well as the local media. Prof. K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University was the Chief Guest. The overall percentage of University results is 67.6%, in which girls score an impressive 82% and boys 58%. The St Aloysius College BBM results for this year stand at 70%, too. Documentary Workshop

You are in for a treat, if you are a film buff. The Department of Journalism of St Aloysius College Mangalore, is organising a Documentary Film Making workshop in October 2006. The workshop will take place during the October vacation from Monday to Sunday (that is after 19th October) for the convenience of students. It will be a full time, practical workshop, involving around 10 hours of practical work daily! The Department intends to take only 25 students, so that all get a chance to handle camera, light, sound, edit, besides scripting. Since single CCD digital cameras are a rage, these days, and easily accessible to youngsters, we have decided to teach filmmaking using single CCD digital (handycams) cameras. Many Celebrations at SAC

KPSC (Karnataka Public Service Commission) held its (clerical level) exam today at our various institutions like St Aloysius College, St Aloysius PU College, and StAloysius High School. Many of the over 4,00,000 students who appeared for the exams all the Karnataka State for about 1,000 posts, there were many from St Aloysius College, too. One of them was caught up on the way, due to landslide; he reached half an hour late, and could not write his exam! Mr Jeevan Pinto, Head, Dept of BCA, chose a different path to his life, when he chose Ms Wilma to be his spouse. The nuptials were blessed at SAC Chapel. Feast of St Aloysius Gonzaga was celebrated at Aloysian Boys' Home, Ullal. Ms Gurtrude, Asst Director for the Welfare of Women and Children was the Chief Guest. Frs. Rector (Fr Francis Serrao), Leo D'Souza (Director of ABH), Principals and other Jesuits from the Jesuit Residence, SAC, also attended the lovely programme organised by the little kids. Besides Jesuits, there were scores of other guests to watch and appreciate the kids.

Patrons' Day; SAC Evening College Results

St Aloysius College Mangalore celebrated its Patrons' Day today on Saturday. The evening began with a Holy Mass with the friends and benefactors of SAC, at 5.30 pm. It was followed by high tea, and a short formal programme. The formals included the Rector's report which was accompanied by a power point presentation, to the friends and benefactors. The SAC institutions also released the souvenir of the Post Centennary Silver Jubilee celebration. Prof. Eric Patrao was warmly felicitated for his immense contribution to the souvenir in particular and to his Alma Mater, in particular. Mr John Chandram, the artist teacher from SAC High School also was fecilitated with a shawl, fruits and some gift for his artistic contribution to the institution. The College friends shared a high-tea-party with the Jesuits of the Residence. St Aloysius Evening College has secured 80% results in III Yr BA, exams for which were held in April - May 2006. The Commerce stream has scored 35%. But with revaluation and pending university announcement of withheld results, the results are expected to go up.

It was broadcast in February, and then later, again in early March. Somehow, it has found more demand with radio listeners. The programme highlights the East-West dilemma of our youth. 21 June. It is the feast of ST Aloysius Gonzaga, the Patron of the St Aloysius College Institutions. St Aloysius, a young Italian Jesuit from a Princely family, renouced his all to serve the poor in the Service of God. He chose the Society of Jesus as his forum to serve God and human beings. Became a Jesuit. During his training, when there was plague in Italy, he was the first one to nurse the plague victims. In their service he offered his last drop; there he breathed his last. Rightly then this Institution is dedicated to the cause of the youth - to pose them their ideal - selfless and energetic St Aloysius. We wish a very happy feast to all our staff, students, wellwishers, benefactors, acquaintences, and admirers. The Mass is at 9.00 am, at Loyola Hall.

First Years Begins

The first year undegraduate courses commenced today at St Aloysius College. The first years, welcomed cordially by the seniors (Journalism)through an impressive powerpoint presentation on Campus Televison (Al-TV). The freshers had a general session, subject-wise (BA, BCom, etc.) where they were given initial input on the general aspects of St Aloysius Institutions, election were conducted, and given the time table. That was their first day at St Aloysius College.
